Facts about Music Education

There is a common misconception that if you haven't learnt to play a musical instrument by a certain age then you never will. No one is too old to learn to play music. It is true that young people absorb learning and instruction more quickly and easily than adults, but the fact is that mature age students have the advantages of greater concentration and genuine interest.

It is important to keep in mind though, that adults have less time on their hands than young people and getting the most out of music lessons takes regular practice. Playing in a band or making a career out of music may not be your reason for taking music lessons, however, great personal satisfaction and a real sense of achievement are two of the benefits gained from your involvement with music lessons.

Choosing the right instrument for you or your child

If you are thinking of learning to play an instrument, the vast array of musical instruments to choose from can be both daunting and overwhelming, particularly for a beginner. Every instrument has its own unique rewards and difficulties. You may find that some instruments are easier to play at first than others but ultimately, no instrument is easier or more difficult to play well than any other.

It may be wise to consider the type of instrument you or your child have always wanted to play or what type of music you or your child listen to and enjoy before making your decision. Another thing to keep in mind is that the cost of an instrument should never be a deterrent to starting music lessons. Metro Music Academy has a comprehensive music instrument and equipment catalogue catering to every student's needs.

Learning to read music

At Metro Music Academy, it is our belief that learning to read music is an important and valuable skill for a musician to learn. Learning to read music is in fact much easier to learn than most people believe is possible and is a significant step toward eventually being able to play, sing or even write any song you want.

Additionally, Learning to read music gives a musician or student access to many thousands of tunes gathered over the years. Whether it is classical, folk, jazz, hip-hop, reggae, techno or rock, music is recognised and written in the same way throughout the world.

Lessons and Practice

Music education consists of 4 basic elements.

bullet

Developing technique through lessons and practice.

bullet

Developing your musical understanding (Training your ears).

bullet

Developing your practical musicianship by playing with others.

bullet

Developing your confidence by playing or performing in front of others.

Not only does music learning outside the context of lessons and practice develop a more rounded musician, it also makes music a lot more fun.

How long it takes to master your instrument?

The length of time that it takes to learn and master an instrument is dependent on your own effort and commitment. The greater the effort and commitment, the more rapid the progress. Learning an instrument is an ongoing process. Even music teachers and the finest performers in the world are still learning.

Beginner classes are designed to get you started in the right direction and provide a foundation for you to get you playing and enjoying your instrument - in just ten weeks.

Exam Accreditation

In jazz, classical and popular music, the only widely recognised qualification for students is the graded examination. Students wishing to make careers of music generally pass through several graded examinations measuring musicianship, technique and theoretical knowledge before going on to take a performing or teaching diploma exam. Examinations are a way of measuring musical progress, but they are not the only method - and they are not for every student!

At Metro Music we leave the decision of whether or not to sit an exam entirely up to teacher and student, or teacher and parent.

Music Tuition Agreement

  1. Lessons are held once per week and are of 30 minutes duration.
  2. Cancellations are only accepted with written notice at least two weeks before term ends (excluding school holidays). Due to strict timetable policies Cancellations cannot be accepted after this time frame. Students are automatically enrolled for the following term and invoiced as per usual. By giving us notice we are able to offer a place to the next waiting student before the next term/year begins.
  3. The commitment for tuition is for a minimum of one full school term (usually 10 weeks). There is no refund of fees if this agreement is terminated during the term by either party. All current lessons roll over from one term to the next. It is therefore not necessary to re-enroll at the end of each term.
  4. Charges for a maximum of 10 lessons per term are payable in advance on a term by term basis. Fees for each term are due 7 days after receiving our tax invoice. Payment should be received by the due date to ensure students are not withdrawn from lessons. If any problems arise with payment of fees please contact Metro Music School immediately to discuss alternative arrangements.
  5. Your first invoice will include fees for music books, practice diaries and/or accessories. Metro Music will supply these items. Cheques and/or money orders should be made payable to Metro Music School. All payments should be sent direct to P.O. Box 874, Eltham, 3095. Internet Banking and/or Credit Card facilities are also available. Please do not give payment to our teachers.
  6. It is the parent’s/student’s responsibility to bring all appropriate instruments and books to each lesson. Hiring and/or purchasing of instruments are available through Metro Music School. (for practice purposes students should have an instrument before commencement of lessons)
  7. Lessons will be made up if the instrumental teacher is absent. All other lessons missed due to non attendance will be considered as given.
  8. Metro Music may use a substitute teacher if the student’s current instrumental teacher is unable to conduct lessons on the regular lesson day.
  9. If there are insufficient enrolments in an offered instrument, students will be included on a waiting list until suitable numbers permit commencement of lessons.
